Your Competitor Has It!

by Jim Sojka

How many times have you heard that statement? Perhaps many times…too numerous to mention. A frequently stated comment, but a comment that many metal fabricators must really think about in today’s market. Today’s current events have many companies downsizing to survive. But companies must still produce quality parts in an accelerated time frame.

How can this be accomplished when changing press brake tooling is completed in as much time as it was 10-20 years ago? Changing press brake tooling (the old fashioned way) did indeed take time as much as 15-20 minutes. In 1990, 15 minutes to change tooling didn’t factor into your bottom line, but in today’s market that 15 minutes of press brake tool changing can add up to $15 or more.

Cost justifications add more confidence into the responsibility of any management team’s decision to purchase capital equipment or accessory press brake products to increase productivity. And if your competitor has labor saving products to increase productivity – why can’t you? Or better yet, why can’t your company purchase labor saving products to be ahead of your competitor?

Just think back…what products were available to cut material before this new machine called a “laser” was introduced? The majority of us thought that a laser was a futuristic machine that we saw for the first time in the James Bond movie Goldfinger. Little did we realize that a laser would be an important contribution to productivity. The first lasers on the market were very expensive compared to the fabricating machines already on the market. However, lasers proved a very important part for the metal fabricator who wanted accurate parts quickly. If one of your competitors purchased a laser and were receiving additional orders, profits were reduced for those who did not move quickly enough.

Soon the metal fabricator realized that the laser, expensive as it was, made more profits because of the gain in productivity. His Return On Investment (ROI) was cost justifiably.

Cost justification today is important now than ever. A close scrutiny of any machine or accessory purchase today is a prudent effort for staying in business and/or still staying ahead of your competitor.

The average U. S. cost for a press brake operator is $60/hour. That $60/hour reflects wages, fringes, benefits, overhead, and profit. With a $60 labor cost, the metal fabricator needs all the help he can get to remain profitable with the least amount of the outlaying of his profit.

With an average cost of $1/minute for a press brake operator, the before mentioned 15 minute tool change is $15…$15 for every tool change. If the press brake operator changes 8 or more times in a 8-hour shift – that adds up to $15 x 8 = $120/day. Imagine $120/day in profit from one press brake operator for not producing a single part. Take $120/day a day and expand that to 250 workdays in a year and that $1/hour is suddenly $30,000/year. Wouldn’t an average metal fabricator like to recover some of that $30,000/year spent on changing press brake tooling per press brake operator?

You can with the patented “quick change button” offered by WILA on press brake tooling. Wila has been manufacturing the New Standard Tooling, the “tooling with the button” since 1991 with satisfied customer all over the world. Quickly adaptable to press brakes with the Wila New Standard Clamping System that seats, centers, and aligns the tooling in less and 8-seconds for a 12-foot press brake, productivity is gained, labor is reduced and profits are realized.

If you are interested in labor savings on set-up time for your press brake, investigate “the tooling with the button”. If you are interested in profits for your company, investigate “the tooling with the button”. Investigate Wila, the press brake tooling and accessory manufacturer of the New Standard tooling and accessories for press brakes.

WHY? Because your competitor has it!
