Wilson Tool Slug Huggers®

by Ron Palick
Vice President of Sales and Marketing
Wilson Tool International, Inc.

Two words distinguish Wilson Tool International tooling-innovation and engineering. For more than 35 years, Wilson Tool has continually driven the fabrication industry forward with its commitment to innovating and engineering the most advanced, productive and efficient tooling solutions.

Many of our earlier innovations have become the industry standard today. Our Slug Hugger® dies, introduced nearly 20 years ago, are still the best solution to prevent slug pulling. Fabricators the world over rely on the unique, patented Slug Hugger design to keep their punch presses running smoothly and efficiently.

If not approached with the right tool, slug pulling can become a serious problem that wastes time, material and money. Slug pulling most often occurs when a slug returns with the punch tip to the surface of the sheet. Slug pulling is more than a nuisance. Slug pulling can damage the punch, the metal part and the punch press.

While other slug pulling solutions constrict the slug at only one point, Wilson Tool's Slug Hugger is the only solution that controls the slug through the entire height of the die. Slug Hugger dies literally "hug" the slug with interior protrusions that hold the slug in place, preventing it from returning with the punch or springing back out of the die. Slug Hugger is a physical characteristic built into the die that is simple, maintenance-free and cost-effective.

Using Slug Hugger results in a reduction in scrapped sheets, less downtime and reduced risk of damage to tooling and machines. With Slug Hugger dies, punching is trouble-free, which is especially critical in the continuous running of flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) or any unattended operation.

The Slug Hugger design does not affect the life of the die. Even if a Slug Hugger die is sharpened to the depth of its protrusions, there is enough clearance around the punch to avoid hitting the protrusions. This prevents any affect on the normal sharpening life of the die.

For proven products, like Slug Hugger dies, count on Wilson Tool. Wilson Tool delivers the most effective tooling solutions available. Today, Wilson Tool remains committed to delivering the most innovative products engineered for performance.

Wilson Tool International is the global leader in tooling solutions for the sheet metal fabrication industry, operating in virtually every industrialized nation in the world. Wilson Tool International has its world headquarters in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, with its European headquarters located in Swindon, England.
