Multi-Tool Technology Takes
A Quantum Leap

by David Bishop

Wilson Tool International, Inc.

In securing its leadership role at the forefront of Multi-Tool technology, Wilson Tool continues to pioneer new and highly sophisticated Multi-Tool designs that expand the flexibility and productivity of today’s turret punch presses. Working in conjunction with its long-term partner, Finn-Power International, Wilson Tool recently introduced a new generation of Multi-Tools that are so advanced, they literally redefine Multi-Tool technology and the relationship between these “turrets within a turret” and the machines that they function within.

For example, our new MT8i-16 and MT20i-8 Multi-Tools for Finn-Power turret punch presses include a custom ram location system that was developed by Wilson Tool engineers with the cooperation of Finn-Power engineers. This unprecedented and highly advanced feature actually eliminates the possibility of over stroking the machine, thereby preventing damage to both the tool and the machine. They also include a milled relief that covers 340 degrees of the top of the tool. Working in conjunction with the ram sensor, this relief makes it possible for the machine to detect when the Multi-Tool is located incorrectly. In the event that this should occur, the machine will automatically move into a strip miss cycle and will shut down protecting the machine from possible damage.

To help reduce the cost of Multi-Tool technology and increase their flexibility, our new Multi-Tools were designed to be installed in any 3-1/2" (D) auto-index station, thus eliminating the need for a dedicated station.

Other features include:

  • Tool changes are fast and easy
  • All Wilson Tool Multi-Tools are hardened and precision ground for longer life and greater reliability
  • Punches are available with optional Optima coating for maximum wear resistance
  • Dies can be ordered in our exclusive Slug Hugger design for positive slug retention
  • All holders feature a built-in WLS (Wilson Lubricating System) internal lubrication system
  • All shaped punches feature keyways on the punch head as opposed to being keyed by the stripper plate
  • The 8-station die assembly features multiple keying in each station, which can be keyed at 0-90, 0-45-90, or 0-90-135 degrees
  • Grind life on punches and dies is .060" (1.5mm)
  • Shapes can be ordered at any specific angle
  • Special 2D shapes are available as required

And finally, we have expanded the capacity of this latest generation of Multi-Tools to enable them to punch thicker materials than most punch press owners ever thought possible.

In today’s extremely competitive business environment, it is important for sheet metal fabricators to closely consider all of the features that they will require from a turret punch press before making their final decision on which machine is right for them. If your products frequently require the punching of a large number of small diameter holes and/or frequent turret rotation, Multi-Tool technology is something that you should carefully consider. And the highly capable turret punch presses currently being offered by such reputable manufacturers as Finn-Power International provide end users with the ability to maximize the benefits of this ever evolving technology, making them more productive and more profitable.
