New Shear Genius® Debuts at Metalform Open House

FINN-POWER exhibited a press brake and robot at Metalform 2005, held March 20-23 at Rosemont Convention Center, Rosemont, IL. However, the real “show stopper” was operating at the FINN-POWER corporate showroom.

After show hours, FINN-POWER hosted an Open House at its showroom in Schaumburg, IL. The Open House marked the North American debut of FINN-POWER’s new Shear Genius Flexible Manufacturing Cell,     combined with the latest bending solutions.

With the current high steel prices, the Shear Genius concept has gained added popularity by savings of up to 10% in material consumption compared with traditional fabricating methods. Inherently easy programming means flexibility through very short setup times.

Shear Genius combines the punching, forming, and tapping versatility of a modern turret punch press with high-quality shearing for separating the components. Unlike laser cutting, only electricity and compressed air are required, while edge quality is more than sufficient for the vast majority of manufacturing tasks.

Automatic component exit allows reliable sorting and stacking of parts by a variety of modular FINN-POWER solutions. Thus, the Shear Genius – and linear-drive Shear Brilliance® – serve as key units in automatic manufacturing lines like Night Train FMS®. Similarly, automatic transfer to a bending cell or a press brake equipped with a robot is available, which was on display during the Open House. Shear Genius models process sheet up to 60”x165” (1,500 mm x 4,200 mm) in size and 0.16” (4 mm) in thickness (mild steel).

In the new Shear Genius, sheet squaring is fast and takes place on the machine table, with no auxiliary table needed. Process stability has been improved by a totally new actuation mechanism for X and Y movement of the coordinate table and by a new, optional fourth clamp. Coordinate table length has been increased to 244” (6,200 mm) to allow punching of a 120” (3,000 mm) sheet, as well as shearing up to 60” (1,500 mm) (Y axis) without repositioning.

The hydraulic punching force is 33 ton US (300 kN). The 20-station turret punch press features increased index speed, indexable upforming, and an optional large work chute.
